Movie : Haq

From http://www.flixunlimited.com
Haq is a brand new Malaysian movie, currently showing in the cinemas since 27 Jan. I had not any idea of its existence until yesterday, when I was waiting for my luggage at the airport. There's a big tv screen there, where they show ads and promos...a sort of entertainment, for the bored passengers, forever waiting for their bags..
So, anyway....there I saw the promo..felt quite interested in it, since the film looked like an action-thriller flick with elements of superpower heroes...the first one to be seen in the local film industry. Lately, there's a "pasar borong" market of horror flicks and comedies. Even the last local action hero movie was a comedy...yes, I mean Cicakman..So, this one seemed to be one of the serious stuff, so I went to check it out. Anyway, uhm...there's Adiputra in the main role...quite a hunk, huh...

This movie is obviously about a battle between good and evil. What I am going to write next might contain SPOILERS...so, if you don't want to be spoiled, please stop reading right now. But if you don't mind, be my guest and just scroll down.

The director is not someone we have heard before, so let's expect something fresh and new. The story is about 2 men who grew up together, Haq and Bad. Bad is sort of adopted by the Haq's family after a death in his family. Haq had also experienced death and loss in his family. Their parents were very close, yet hatred and jealousy have nurtured in Bad's heart since his childhood that he resents everybody and promise to avenge the death. Haq, on the other hand, is the kind-hearted one and take care of Bad's mother and Aina (whom I have no idea of the relationship between her and the rest of the characters whatsoever, maybe a cousin??). Another main point here is Haq possesses a superpower, a heritage from his father. He can move things without touching them and has extra strengths. Bad does not possess any superpower ability or strength.

As I understand it, Bad ran away from the family. They grew up separately, each taking different directions in life. Well, since I have told you which one is the bad and the good guy, you can easily guess the kind of life each has taken. All the time, Bad seems to have only one purpose in life, which is to destroy Haq. So, finally, he comes back home, with a scheme. By now, he also has a superpower. How he get it, I don't know. Maybe we have to assume that he made a satanic deal with the devil, I guess. One thing happens after another, until they finally meet in the final battle. There's the battle, and you can guess who will win. It is a battle with cool special effects yet the battle itself is not a memorable one. It is easy.

Apart from that, the cinematography and the special effects can be complimented graciously. Yet, at some point of the story, I think those things are unnecessary. The story could be developed further, so far that I've seen, it was too straight and simple, that at some point, I think that as if I was eating a beautiful, juicy mandarin oranges so fast, that I couldn't actually taste the sweetness of the fruit. It didn't quite make any sense.

I understand that this is the first movie for the director, this movie really looks like an experiment. However, I lauded the idea that the story is told without ignoring the fact of the existence of Almighty God and humans as His subjects should always be humble and not being arrogant with everything that God blessed us with.

So, if you don't care much to see Adiputra's devilish charm and six-pack abs..(and he is the only one in the movie who shows it..) you can still see the movie to see and evaluate yourself how this RM2.5mill movie (according to the director) fares. It's a good try.
